How do you ensure pet safety during the hot summer months? As the temperature rises, so do the risks to your furry family members. There are ways to keep them safe and help them beat the heat and we have compiled a list of the steps you can take:

Outside Walks:

  • Take him on walks in the early morning hours or later in the evening. This can help prevent overheating, paw pad burns and sunburns.
  • Dogs with sensitive skin, short hair, or light- colored hair should have sunscreen applied. Make sure it is pet specific.
  • Excessive panting or drooling can be a sign of heat stroke. Run, don’t walk, to your vet immediately.
  • Before walking on asphalt, test the surface. If you cannot hold your hand on it for at least 5 seconds comfortably, it is too hot for your pet.

Car Rides:

Home Safety:

  • If it feels to warm to you without the air conditioning on, it is too hot for her. Short nosed animals are especially susceptible to the heat and can have breathing problems. This includes pugs, shih tzus, Boston Terriers and Himalayan Cats. To see a more complete list visit https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/respiratory/c_multi_brachycephalic_airway_syndrome
  • Close the blinds when the sun comes directly in.
  • Outdoors, make sure you have fresh cold water and a shady area your pet can access. A dog house does not count as it traps the heat.
  • Do not leave your pet outside for an extended period of time and never, if you aren’t at home to monitor.

Helpful Tools:

  • Pup Tent – can be purchased at Wayfair. com. It provides elevation, shade and ventilation.
  • H2o On the Go – can be purchased on Amazon.com. The lid serves as the water bowl.
  • Cooling Vest – can be purchased on Amazon.com. You soak it and wring it out so it can provide evaporative cooling technology.
